How Exercise Can Help You Live Longer

We know that exercise has many worthwhile benefits, and many consider longevity as part of that package.  A healthy lifestyle can and will improve so many areas of your life, including extending it.  Incorporating as little as three miles a day of walking can mean the difference in years!  Let’s take a closer look at some studies that prove daily physical activity can add years to your life!

Let’s consider for a moment that 1 in 3 people die from heart disease, and 1 in 4 die from cancer.   These two take ownership of a large majority of disease in the world.  But, will Exercise help you battle these massive and debilitating culprits?  Not only will regular exercise help prevent these two, but you’ll also see a drop in risk for many other types of the diseases and disabilities that are tied to aging.

A recent article in the New York Times Blog points out that, “Having unhealthy cholesterol numbers, elevated blood pressure or an expanding waistline substantially increases your changes of developing heart disease.”  But it also points out that a new study finds exercise as the solution – and that’s even if everything else remains in the high-risk category.  No magic pill, no laser under a physicians hand, but getting up and exercising.

Many of us struggle with cancer in our families.  It’s a horrible thing to go through, and while we await a cure there are many things we can do to help prevent it from happening.  First is a healthy diet rich in antioxidant foods including healthy veggies.   In conjunction, those who exercise show a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of certain cancers than their sedentary peers.  Drinking plenty of water has also been shown to cut the risk of certain cancers, and these work in tandem with exercising regularly.

There has also been research done by Harvard, in an Alumni Study that shows the more physical activity done in a day the lower your expected mortality rate becomes.  This study was done on a long-term basis, which included Harvard graduates displaying better survival with burning about 2,000 calories a week, the equivalent of walking 3 miles a day.
