With the winter upon us, it is time to start taking extra precautions to help keep yourself from getting sick. While there is no way to absolutely guarantee that you will not get sick this winter, following a few simple tips and procedures that will help you to avoid getting sick this winter.
1. Wash Your Hands Regularly
Perhaps the best step you can take toward avoiding sickness this winter is to simply wash your hands on a regular basis. Many people become ill after touching their germ-infested hands to their eyes or their mouths. Unfortunately, it is quite easy to accidentally pick up these germs as you come in contact with other people, door knobs, desktops and other items that are filled with germs. So, wash these germs away by washing your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap regularly throughout the day.
2. Get a Flu Shot
To keep the flu at bay, you should get an influenza vaccination every year. It is particularly important to get a flu shot if you are a healthcare worker or if you suffer from chronic conditions such as kidney problems, diabetes, asthma or heart disease.
3. Exercise Regularly
Studies have found that people who get regular exercise are less likely to catch a cold than those who do not exercises. Just 45 minutes of moderate exercise five times per week can help you see these benefits.
4. Eat Healthy
Following a healthy diet will help your body stay strong, thereby allowing it to more effectively fend off illness. Be sure to include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet while avoiding the temptation to gorge on too many sweets throughout the winter months.
5. Use a Humidifier
Dry air serves as the perfect habitat for cold viruses. Unfortunately, using a furnace to warm your house has the unfortunate side effect of drying the air inside. To counteract this side effect, use a room humidifier to add moisture back in to the air. Just be sure to change out the water each day and to clean the humidifier every few days.
6. Buy a New Toothbrush
Since a toothbrush can serve as a breeding ground for germs, most experts recommend switching out toothbrushes once every three months. It is also a good idea to replace your toothbrush after you have suffered from a cold or flu.
7. Avoid Germs in Public Restrooms
Studies have routinely found that a large number of people do not wash their hands after using a public restroom. These people are further spreading germs as they touch handles and other items in the bathroom. To avoid picking up these germs, use a paper towel to turn off the water after washing your hands. Then, use another paper towel to dry your hands. Finally, use this same paper towel as a barrier when you open the door, and then throw the towel away after the door is opened.
Taking a few precautionary steps toward keeping your body healthy and avoiding germs is the best way to avoid getting sick this winter. With the added boost of a flu shot coupled with the use of a humidifier, you are likely to stay healthy throughout the winter months.
