Therefore, it is important to explore the pros and cons of both options when and find out how to choose between an upright and a recumbent bike.

Considering Your Body’s Needs

When choosing between an upright and a recumbent bike, you should first consider your body’s needs. Most people find the recumbent bike to be the more comfortable option. This is largely because the recumbent bike provides back support, which means you put less strain on your back as you pedal. Therefore, if you have back issues or if you are simply concerned that your back may become tired or sore after riding for awhile, a recumbent bike is definitely the better option.

Examining Your Exercise Goals

Most studies have shown that you exert the same amount of energy with both upright and recumbent bikes. Therefore, you are likely to burn the same amount of calories with either option. Due to the position of your legs with a recumbent bike versus an upright bike, however, you typically provide the legs with a greater workout when you use the recumbent bike. As a trade-off, you are not likely to get as much of a core workout when you use a recumbent bike versus an upright bike.
