Here are 7 tips on how to prepare for a healthy 2016!
1. Set SPECIFIC goals!
What fitness goals do you want to achieve in 2016? Instead of setting vague goals for yourself such as “I want to lose weight in 2016,” try setting specific goals that give you attainable milestones to strive for. For instance, you could set a goal to lose a few inches around your tummy, or to lower your blood pressure. Perhaps instead of losing weight, you want to gain muscle. You could also try to focus your goals less on how you look and more on how you feel. Of course, the two tend to go hand in hand, but you could make it your goal to not overindulge in food to the point where you feel sluggish and sick after every meal. Focus on what your body wants and needs from you this year, and treat it accordingly.
2. Class Pass
If you want to become more active in the New Year but you aren’t sure where to start, Class Pass is the perfect guide for you. Class Pass allows you access to thousands of fitness classes with only one monthly pass. The best part is, there is no commitment or cancellation fee. So, if and when you find a class that you enjoy and what to stick with, you can simply cancel your monthly pass and continue on with only the classes you enjoy! This will give you plenty of exposure to various different kinds of workout activities, allowing you to avoid getting bored with a repetitive fitness routine.
3. Take down your measurements
This one is important! Often times it is hard to ‘see’ results when you are only focusing on the number on a scale. If you are losing fat and gaining muscle, the scale may not properly reflect your progress because muscle weighs more than fat. By taking measurements around your waist, hips, thighs, calves, and biceps, you will be able to clearly see the areas that you are toning up without worrying about how much you weigh. This will also help in setting those specific goals for yourself if you know your exact measurements.
4. Take pictures
Similar to measuring yourself, taking pictures of yourself will also help in tracking your progress more so than a scale. If you neglect to take ‘before’ pictures, it is often times hard to see the progress that you are truly making. Those tiny differences that you are making in your body day after day really add up! If you have a before picture to reference, it can help you to see how far you’ve come and give you a boost of motivation to keep going! But don’t just take a before picture, be sure to take pictures of yourself throughout your whole journey!
When taking pictures, be sure to wear minimal clothing. A pair of shorts for men and perhaps a pair of shorts and a sports bra for women. Whatever you are comfortable with. Don’t cover yourself up in baggy clothing, that makes it harder to see the results.
5. Go shopping!
Get yourself excited to start your health and fitness journey by investing in some new workout items. Whether you want to buy items for a home gym, new clothing to workout in, a fitness tracker or a gym membership, you will be setting yourself up for success in the New Year.
6. Cooke more, eat out less
In order to make 2016 as healthy as possible, it is important to limit eating out as much as possible. This will be good for both your wallet and your waistline! Set a budget for weekly food spend and be sure to not go over it. A good rule of thumb for healthy food shopping is to shop along the perimeter of grocery stores where fresh veggies, fruit, and meats are stored. Unhealthier, processed, and sugary foods tend to be stored in the middle aisles of grocery stores. Of course, an important part of staying on track is allowing yourself to indulge every once in a while. Don’t deprive your body, simply keep everything in moderation.
7. Write it down!
Write everything down on your fitness journey. Create a daily food journal to help track what you are putting into your body. Write down how you feel after a day of healthy eating and how you feel after a day full of slip ups. Write down what workouts you did that day, how you felt after the workout, and any workouts you would like to try in the future. Write down how your goals are going, any new goals that you have come up with along the way, and any changes you’ve made to previous goals. If you think it is important and you are going to want to remember it, just write it down. Having a fitness journal can be an excellent tool in your weight loss journey.
Most importantly, remember to find happiness in your every day life. Often times, life is only as good as your mindset. Wake up positive, chase your dreams, and go to bed satisfied.
