It comes as no surprise to many people that drinking soda is bad for your health. But why? The negative effects this sugary beverage can have on a person’s body and overall health are innumerable. Of the many reasons to avoid this carbonated drink, here are just 10 reasons you should stop drinking soda.
1. Increased risk of heart attack
According to research from Harvard school of public health, drinking just one sugary beverage a day is associated with a 20 percent increased risk in having a heart attack over a 22 year period.
2. Sugary drinks affect your metabolism
According to one study, after just four weeks of drinking about 140 grams of sugar a day (or the size of a Super Gulp), participants metabolism was severely affected making it more difficult for them to burn fat and lose weight.
3. High amounts of sugar
One regular can of soda can hold up to 33 grams or 10 teaspoons of sugar. This puts a lot of stress on your body to produce enough insulin in order to combat the excess sugar. Over time, consuming this much sugar every day can lead to obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, and heart disease. Just one soda a day can do all of that!
4. High fructose corn syrup
High fructose corn syrup is a byproduct of corn that is manufactured using traces of mercury according to this study. “Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered”.
5. Phosphoric acid
Soda contains phosphoric acid, which is detrimental to calcium, potentially leading to osteoporosis, bone loss, and dental decay. This acid blocks normal digestion in the stomach and inhibits nutrient absorption, which can lead to kidney problems, muscle loss, and accelerated aging.
Unfortunately, diet sodas aren’t any better…
Typically used as a sugar substitute in soft drinks, aspartame is unfortunately even more harmful than sugar. It can be incredibly toxic and has been associated with cancer, mood disorders, and other health related issues. Additionally, artificial sweeteners do not break down in the body.
7. Soda Gut
In a study conducted by researches from the University of Texas Health Science Center, 475 adults were studied over a period of ten years. Researchers noted a 70 percent increase in waist circumference compared to those who didn’t drink soda. In addition to increased waist size, participants who consumed two or more diet sodas a day recorded a 500 percent increase in weight!
8. Caramel coloring
The caramel color of many sodas is known to cause cancer. It is understood that only 16 micrograms of 4-methylimadazole per person, per day is enough to cause cancer. There are 200 micrograms of 4-methylimadazole in one 20-ounce bottle of soda with the caramel coloring.
9. No nutritional value
Sugary soda is essentially a can of empty calories. There are absolutely no essential nutrients whatsoever. No vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, or fiber. Soda adds nothing beneficial do your diet. It is simply an unnecessary amount of added sugar and extra calories to your daily diet.
Upon consuming sugar, dopamine is released into the brain. Dopamine is responsible for the feeling of pleasure. The human brain is constantly looking for activities that release dopamine. This is the way that all addictive drugs work, such as cocaine. It is the reason people become dependent on them.
Unfortunately, many studies have shown that sugar can have a similarly addictive effect on the brain. For those who have a predisposition to addiction, drinking soda can become what is known as reward-seeking behavior. Many people consume sugary drinks in a pattern that would suggest an addiction or abusive behavior. They essentially believe they cannot live without soda, or they will experience severe withdrawals without it.
Soda may taste good and feel refreshing, however it is clear that there are far more reasons to avoid soda than reasons to drink it. The sweet taste is not worth the health risks, as further emphasized in the picture below.
Stick to natural drinks with no added sugar. You might be surprised how tasty a healthy drink can be!
