For a lot of people, running is the least favorite form of cardiovascular exercise. Running can be a bit boring, tedious, or even painful for many people. However, the benefits of running can far outweigh the negatives, and you might even find yourself having fun on your run if you follow these 4 tips to enjoy running.
Treadmills are a wonderful piece of equipment, especially on days when it is cold, rainy or snowy outside. However, if you don’t want to be stuck inside while you are working out, then don’t! Run around a park in your area, find a trail where you can enjoy the scenery while you are running, or simply take a run around your neighborhood. Running outside can be a literal breath of fresh air and just the thing you may need to do to start enjoying running again.
Switch it up
If a 3-mile jog at the same pace just doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. Many people find running boring because they try to do the same thing over and over again. Next time you venture out for a run, try switching things up! Perhaps you can give high intensity interval training (HIIT) a try. A simple HIIT workout would be to sprint for 30 seconds then rest for 30 seconds and repeat ten to fifteen times. Play around with your intervals. The more you practice, the less time you need for rest. Make it a goal to be able to sprint for 45 seconds and rest for 15. Don’t get stuck in a running rut. Find a running workout you enjoy. The possibilities are endless with running!
Sometimes the best way to get through a run is to distract yourself so that you forget your running. Try putting together a playlist of all your favorite songs to jam out to on your run. Another option would be to listen to podcasts or audio books while you are running. You may just get so engulfed in whatever you are listening to that you forget you are exercising too!
Having the proper gear on a run is not only extremely important for your body, but it may also allow you to enjoy running more. If you are hesitant to run because every time you do you get aches and pains in your joints, that could be a sign that you are wearing the wrong gear (or not enough gear). When it comes to running, style is fun but comfort and protection is more important. Make sure you are wearing a good pair of running shoes that will give you the support your need. Additionally, invest in a knee brace or support for any other area of your body that may hurt when you run.
Running can be so beneficial for not only your physical health, but your mental health as well. You need only to find what it is that will make you enjoy running.
